Postal History
Soldiers' Letter: 1823 (14 Mar.) entire folio soldier's letter to his mother in Nottinghamshire, "from Gunner Wm Upton, Major Wilkinson's Company 9th Battalion Royal Reg. of Artillery", marked "P Paid" and countersigned by the Commanding captain, with light strike of the serif letter despatch c.d.s. on the reverse showing part of the outer ring. The writer is very unhappy with his lot and wants to be bought out of the Royal Artillery, " ... the island is hot, even in winter ... butter 3/- a pound ... 30,000 negroes on island". There is some light ageing of the paper and the letter has become fragile along the fold lines with some splitting, nevertheless a rare soldier's letter from this island with contents which would be interesting to transcribe.
