1840 (11 Feb.) 1d. envelope printed in black on wove paper, setting 2A, addressed to Manchester and bears a good strike of Crowned "paid" despatch c.d.s. and signed at foot "Robert Hyde Greg", red wax seal on the reverse bearing the family crest. Fresh and fine. Specialised PE 9, £6,000. One hundred and twenty six covers recorded. Photo

Robert Hyde Greg (1795-1875). He was a founder of the Mechanics' Institute. He was an active member of the Liberal Party and the Anti-Corn Law League. Though he was elected to Parliament for Manchester in 1839, it was without his consent and he resigned in the following year. He was an opponent of factory reform, trades unions and worker health and safety legislation.
