Horatio Allen: Southern Pacific Railroad Company. 7% First Mortgage Bond $500, Texas 1856. #135, staining overall, about very fine.

Horatio Allen (1802-99) was an engineer and inventor. He played a crucial role in implementing the railroad system in the USA. Working for the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, he planned and supervised the construction of a sixteen-mile railroad extension to the canal and was sent to England to purchase the "Stourbridge Lion" locomotive from Robert Stephenson. He later became chief engineer of the Charleston and Hamburg Railroad, where he convinced the directors of the company to use steam engines rather than horses to pull their trains and purchased the "Best Friend of Charleston", the First locomotive ever built in the United States.
