1897 (23 Mar.) opened-out envelope registered to Yokohama bearing, on the reverse, Revenue Surcharge 1c. (2) and Small Figures 2c. vertical pair used in combination with DowagerSmall Figures ½c. on 3ca. pair and 4c. on 4ca. (2) and Small Figures 5c. on Small Dragon 5ca., all tied by fine strikes of "customs/hankow" c.d.s. with Shanghai Customs c.d.s. (26.3) alongside. The address side with a faint strike of Hankow large "R" struck in red with Japan Koban 5s. and 10s. applied each side tied by "shanghai/j.p.o" single-ring c.d.s. (28.3), the associated red registration label, Yokohama arrival (3.4) and a further Hankow despatch. Paying the correct 10c. plus 10c. registration.


A magnificent and beautiful franking with all of the stamps displaying particularly rich colours.


The only registered Revenue Surcharge cover from Hankow to Japan and one of only three such overseas covers cancelled by the Hankow Customs c.d.s. The Small Dragon surcharged stamp is very scarce used in combination with the Revenue Surcharged stamps
