1876 (26 July) opened-out red band envelope to Nagasaki bearing, on the reverse, Japan 1876 Koban 5s. brown cancelled by crossroads obliterator with the type 1 "i.j.postal agency/shanghai" double-ring c.d.s. alongside and with the arrival c.d.s. (28.7) on the address side. Soiled and some worm damage on the address side.


A very early Japanese Post Office cover as well as early use of the Koban issue.

The Postal Agency was opened on 15th April 1876.

The Koban issue was first released on 23rd June 1876



The operations of the Japanese Postal Agency were secured after the purchase of The Pacific Mail Company's Yokohama to Shanghai branch by the Mitsubishi Steamship Mail Company in March 1875



The circular datestamp was prepared by Mr Samuel Bryan of the United States Postal Department, hence the similarity of the datestamps from these two post offices
