Abbas Hilmi I Pasha, (1812-1854), was born at Jeddah, a grandson of Muhammed Ali of Egypt. He succeeded his uncle as Wali of Egypt and Sudan in 1848, giving the Sultan of Turkey use of his fleet and 15,000 men during the Crimean War. In his personal life his interest in the breeding of Arabian horses, in which he continued to build on the work of his grandfather. Wali Pasha was murdered by two servants at the Banha Palace in July 1854.
