62858 Petty Officer Telegraphist James Russell Melrose, born Fauldhouse, Linlithgow, Scotland, 21.7.1901; enlisted with the Royal Navy as Boy Telegraphist during the Great War; latterly serving in and off Palestine; a letter dated 30.6.1944 provides more information to the award of the Distinguished Service Medal 'Sir, I am commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to inform you that they have learned with great pleasure that, on the advice of the First Lord, the King has been graciously pleased, on the occasion of His Majesty's Birthday, to award you with the Distinguished Service Medal for gallantry in the face of the Enemy, and for setting an example of wholehearted devotion to duty which upheld the high traditions of the Royal Navy.
