'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He showed great coolness in organising and reforming his men tinder heavy fire. Later he showed fine leadership and courage in rallying his men under heavy shell fire, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy.

'In recognition of gallant and distinguished service in Italy.'

Colour Sergeant Walter Arthur Barnby, D.C.M., M.M., born Hull, Yorkshire, March 1895; enlisted in the 4th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, 1908; served with the 4th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment during the Great War on the Western Front from 17.4.1915, initially as Private 1908; awarded the M.M. December 1916, most likely for operations on the Somme, the 1/4th East Yorkshire Regiment in action 16.11.1916, the Medal Index Card noting '...M.M. awarded as Barmby'; gassed in November 1917; wounded in action, 27.5.1918, during the 'First Assault' of the Battle of the Aisne, a day on which the German's '...having broken through the French 22nd Division on the left, they were soon attacking from the west also, so that of the 5/Green Howards and 4/East Yorkshire and their attached troops only small parties managed to escape. From his Headquarters at Craonne, Lieut.-Colonel J.A.R. Thomson saw enemy troops on the southern edge of the Californie plateau about 6a.m., and with his headquarters and the reserve Company of the 4/East Yorkshire, made a gallant attempt to dislodge them by counter-attack; but the ascent was steep and the effort failed with heavy casualties', the Regiment suffered 97 casualties on the day; awarded the D.C.M., August 1918; demobilised, 20.2.1919; re-engaged serving as 4336419 4th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, discharged, 20.5.1935; re-enlisted, retaining service number, 18.7.1935; transferred, 160th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, 30.9.1938, serving with the Corps in Africa and Italy during the Second War, being Mentioned in the Despatches for service in Italy.
