Commander Cecil Julian Bateman, D.S.C., born Marylebone, London, 1915; commissioned Lieutenant, Royal Navy, 5.10.1938; Commanding Officer, Motor Torpedo Boat 27, Royal Naval Base H.M.S. Tamar, Hong Kong; served with the Royal Navy during the Second War, aboard H.M.S. Hornet, H.M.S. Winchelsea and as First Lieutenant aboard H.M.S. Onslaught; completed an anti-submarine course, 1943; appointed Commanding Officer, H.M.S. Liddlesdale, a British escort destroyer, 4.10.1943, during which time the vessel, in combination with H.M.S. Termagent and Tenacious effected the sinking of U-453 in the Ionian Sea, north-east of Cape Spartivento, 21.5.1944; Bateman was awarded the D.S.C. for the relief of Greece, with the Admiralty enclosure confirming the award 'Sir, I am commanded by My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to inform you that they have learned with great pleasure that, on the advice of the First Lord, the King has been graciously pleased to award you the Distinguished Service Cross for gallantry and devotion to duty in operations which led to the clearance of the Aegean and the relief of Greece. This Award was published in the London Gazette Supplement of 14th August 1945.'; promoted Lieutenant Commander, 5.10.1945; Commander, 30.6.1952; retired, 8.7.1956; died at Thanet, Kent, 1.12.1961.
