Military Commissions
1895 (28 September) a commission to James Knowles signed at top "Victoria R.I." and "Lansdowne" at foot, with £1.10 revenue stamp, heavily creased with some splitting and soiling. Also 1915 (26 March) commission to Pinero Jerome Brickwell signed at top "George R.I."; creased an soiled. (2)
Henry Petty Fitzmaurice, 5th Marquess of Lansdowne (1845-1927), was the quintessential aristocratic soldier, scholar and statesman who held senior positions in Liberal and Conservative cabinets from the House of Lords as well as retaining the respect of both King Edward VII and King George V. He served as a model Governor General of Canada, Viceroy of India, Secretary of State for War and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
James Knowles was later to serve as A.D.C. to Field Marshal Roberts
