Constantine the Great (AD 307-337), AE Nummus (22.4 x 20.6 mm 5.12 g 6h), London mint, CONSTANTINVS P AVG, helmeted and decorated with a diadem style band rather than a laurel wreath, cuirassed bust of Constantine left, spear over right shoulder and shield on left, rev. CONCORD MILIT, Concordia standing left, holding standard in each hand, star in right field, PLN in exergue (RIC 202 var.; Huvelin 89-89a var.; CT 7.04.022 var. (this coin)), good very fine / very fine.

Ex Toone collection.

The martial busts of the right star series allude to Constantine's forthcoming military campaign against Maxentius. The helmeted types with a plain or diademed band are known from only a few examples and it is unclear what the reason is for this type of decoration. This coin is illustrated on the CT plate 7.04.022(2).
