Aethelred II (978-1016), Penny, 1.73g, last small cross type, Castle Gotha, Goda, diademed bust left, rev. +goda on goÐabyri, cross pattée within inner circle (SCBI 50 St Petersburg I, No 1200 - same dies, N.777; S.1154), light pecking, essentially as struck with precision centring, high quality metal and a pleasing even tone, extremely fine, this Cornish mint extremely hard to source, especially so in such high grade and with a mint signature this full

c.f. R. H. M. Dolley and F. Elmore Jones, BNJ (1955-57), Vol. XXVIII, The mints "Aet Gothabyrig" and "Aet Sith(m)estebyrig", pp.270-282 whereby three specimens of this type are listed, all of which are in the Systematic Collection at Stockholm. No further specimens are to be found on the Fitzwilliam Early Medieval Corpus nor have any passed through the main european numismatic houses in recent times. It is entirely possible that this is the only piece of this mint/type available to private collections
