Lot: 536

Aethelred II (978-1016), Penny, 1.29g, Helmet type, Ipswich, Godric, helmeted, radiate and armoured bust left, rev. +giodcic mo gipes, voided long cross over quadrilateral with a trefoil of pellets to cusps (N.775; S.1152), pecks, the obverse weakly struck, fine and an intriguing coin which may still be attributable to the Hiberno-Norse series of Dublin given further consideration

In an article entitled 'An unexpected "mint" in the Hiberno-Norse series', SNC Feb 1973, p.44, Michael Dolley outlined a rationale for the reattribution of these GIODCIC of Ipswich pieces to the Hiberno-Norse series. In a subsequent article 'Hiberno-Norse coins of the Helmet type' by Mark Blackburn (in Jonsson, K, 1990, Studies in Late Anglo-Saxon Coinage), the attribution is then given back to the English series. Blackburn gives the reattribution based on a small batch of East Anglian made dies which display similar characteristics to the Hiberno-Norse series
