Danelaw, St Martin of Lincoln coinage (early 920s), Penny, 0.47g, Sword/cross type, Lincoln, sci¯m / [arti] in two lines, divided by sword placed horizontally across field, pommel to the left, inverted t below lower legend, rev. +l[incola civt]a around voided cross, interlaced clockwise, cross in centre (Blackburn M-; N.486; S.963), a fragment of c.25% but extremely rare and a numismatically significant piece, extremely fine, this only the second example available to commerce

Of the eight St. Martin of Lincoln pennies recorded by Blackburn in 2011 seven are in museum collections. The only example in private hands is the Norweb specimen, Spink, 13 June 1985, lot.34. This is the ninth example to surface and the first specimen to come to auction in 30 years.
