1864 (12 Jan.) entire letter from Wellington to London, marked "via Marseilles", bearing 1862 2d. pale blue, Plate I (worn), and 6d. brown horizontal pairs, both with margins in places, and 6d. brown single with four margins or margins in places, all cancelled by "7" obliterator, showing arrival Paid c.d.s. (12.3) with despatch datestamp on reverse. A couple of the stamps with small defects though a most unusual franking at 10d. plus 1/- for late fee. S.G. 38, 42. Photo
Note: The late fee of 1/- was introduced on 1 January 1864. It would appear that it was not mandatory to mark mail as Late Letter or that it was being charged Late Fee. It is presumed that the additional postage was sufficient in order to accept the letter for inclusion in supplementary mails. Such mails were to be kept open until within twenty minutes of the latest period of despatch from the office. (Gerald Ellott)
