Commissioned Boatman John Charles, born Lulworth, Dorset, October 1834; enlisted in the Royal Navy as Boy 2nd Class, November 1847; advanced Ordinary Seaman, October 1852; posted to H.M.S. Cruizer, April 1853, and served in her during the Baltic Campaign and Second China War; transferred to H.M.S. St. Vincent, May 1861; awarded Naval L.S. & G.C., April 1875.
