1881 Company Sergeant William Jarvis, born Glenfield, Leicestershire, 1816; enlisted in the Royal Artillery, October 1834; promoted Bombardier, April 1846; Corporal, April 1847; served with the 4th Company, 5th Battalion, Royal Artillery during the Third Kaffir War, 1850-53; promoted Sergeant, February 1854; Company Sergeant, November 1855; discharged, December 1855, after 21 years and 61 days' service.
