Niger Coast Protectorate
The "Dunrovin" Collection

1894 (Aug.) "one/half penny" surcharged on 2½d. at Old Calabar
960 of these provisionals were made. The sheets were surcharged in rows of eight. Three rows (24 stamps) received the double surcharge, three having the "oie"
[8] variety
Surcharge Double
[8] showing variety "oie" for "one", on fragment and cancelled by violet c.d.s. (15.9.94), fine. Extremely rare. Brandon Certificate (1999). S.G. 65c, £10,000. Photo

Note: This stamp does not conform to the theory that the reason for the double surcharge was that the first surcharge was out of plane. This surcharge, amongst other examples, seems to indicate that one row was, although level, too faint and shifted sideways. In this printing, unlike the out of plane printings, the settings are not coincedent; hence the double surcharge with "oie" but not a double "oie". The example in the Royal Collection also confirms this.
