Lot: 486

Ireland, Edward IV (1461-83) sun and roses / rose on cross issue, 1478-83, Penny, 0.37g, Drogheda, crowned facing bust, a rose each side of crown and neck, rev. vi[..]a.dr[..]eda, large rose over long cross (D.F. -; S.-), chipped, the third known for Drogheda for this issue, the first with this obverse, fine, extremely rare Estimate £ 2,000-2,500 Found southern England, c.1995. The sun and roses issue was unknown for Drogheda until 2007 when an example was sold by us (Spink Auction, 27 June 2007, lot 286). A second example subsequently appeared in 2010, also sold by us (Spink Auction, 2 December 2010, lot 985). The obverse of both these coins had alternating suns and roses by the bust, whilst this new coin has roses alone by the crown and neck. This therefore seems to be an unrecorded variety for this very rare Drogheda coinage and the first known example.
