Prince Edward Island Early Letters and Handstamps Mail from Great Britain 1798 (7 Mar.) entire letter ex the "Douglas" correspondence from Edinburgh, addressed to "St Johns Island, Gulf of St. Lawrence" and carried by a merchant vessel. No markings or charges were applied. An early incoming "Coffee House" letter Estimate £ 100-120 Note: The ongoing 1793 Anglo-French war inflicted heavy losses on the Packet Service and much transatlantic mail was carried by private ships using "coffee house" agents and merchants.
