Gold Coast The Ashanti Wars The Northern Territories 1898 (22 Apr.) envelope to Newcastle, marked "Bona" at top left, bearing 1891 2 1/2d. tied by "kumasi/gold coast" double-ring d.s., showing "paid/liverpool/br. packet" c.d.s. (25.5) in red with Cape Coast transit d.s. on reverse; the envelope a little soiled and distressed. Photo Estimate £ 250-300 Note: This cover was sent by a member of the Lt. Henderson expedition who set out in 1896-97 to establish the Gold Coast boundaries in view of French incursions. He approached Bona in 1897 but was captured by the son of Samori, a noted slave trader. He was eventually released. Bona was ceded to the French by the treaty of 14th June 1898.
