Gold Coast The Ashanti Wars The 1900 Expedition This took place between 25th March 1900 and Christmas Day 1900 involving in all 3000 troops. Sir Frederick Hodgson with his wife, marched to Kumasi without opposition. On 18th April Capt. Middlemist arrived at Kumasi with a column of soldiers and assumed military command. On 25th April Kumasi was surrounded and besieged. On 23rd June, The Governor and Major Morris in Military command, cut his way out of Kumasi and made for the coast, leaving a garrison of 600 men besieged. On 15 July Col. James Willcocks relieved Kumasi with 1000 troops. Pacification expeditions continued until a Peace Treaty was signed on 25th December. 1900 W.H. Smith & Son magazine wrapper from London addressed to Capt. Parmeter at Cape Coast Castle and redirected in red crayon to KSI (Kumasi) and sent separately to Kumasi, showing Cape Coast (11.3) and smudged Kumasi (20.3) datestamps; some creases and other small faults.
