Gold Coast The Ashanti Wars The 1895 - 1896 Expedition The Expedition lasted from 11th November 1895 to 8th February 1896. It involved approximately 3000 troops and took place under the military command of. Col. Sir Francis Scott. The Expedition marched to Kumasi without a shot being fired; kidnapped King Prempeh and retired back to Accra without any fighting. A garrison was instituted at Kumasi. 1895 envelope from the "Sitwell" correspondence to Northumberland, marked "Ashanti Expedition - No Stamps", showing oval-framed "war/Crown/office" cachet, "official paid/london s.w." c.d.s. in red (6.1) and, on reverse, Newcastle and arrival (7.1) datestamps; also picture postcard (stamp missing) of "Deported King Prempeh of Asante and his attendants".
