1883 (1 January) Unified Issue Essays 1882 (4 May) series of ten trials submitted by De La Rue to the Post Office in an attempt to eliminate the problem of distinguishing the various values, comprising 1/2d., 1d., 1 1/2d., 2d., 2 1/2d., 3d., 4d. 5d., 6d. and 1/- (lettered AC) proofs of existing designs in lilac in doubly fugitive ink on Crown watermarked gummed paper, each surcharged with its own face value in large black type.
