1883 (1 January) Unified Issue Essays 1881 (19 Mar.) De La Rue appendix sheet (155x284mm.) bearing a series of 2d. lithographed essays all inscribed "postage" in three different designs in four different colours with the intended face value, between 1/2d. and 1/-, written alongside each, the " 1/2d" in green with the corners of the essay truncated for a revised design with the new corners drawn in ink, the sheet headed "Postage", dated "19 mar 81" and marked "jeffreys scheme". A remarkable series. Cat. £15,000 Estimate £ 6,000-8,000 Note: On 10 March 1881 T Jeffrey, Head of the London Postal Service wrote suggesting that stamps could be distinguished by the three primary colours and by shape. On 19 March 1881 De La Rue submitted three examples of their interpretations of Jeffrey´s ideas. The sheet offered above followed the sheets mentioned above
