1840 One Penny Black Plate VIII Covers 1841 (1 Mar.) wrapper bearing HE-HH horizontal strip of four, small to very large margins all round and tied by black Maltese Crosses on large wrapper addressed to Doctors Commons, London, the flap bearing a fine strike of Andover despatch c.d.s. with London arrival (2.3); two vertical filing creases, one just affecting HH. A charming 4d. rate cover Estimate £ 2,000-2,500 provenance: ´Maximus´, May 1970 Doctors Commons, near St. Paul´s Churchyard, was a college for the study and practice of Civil Law. Members of the Doctors´ Commons were those who held degrees either of doctor of civil law at Oxford or doctor of law at Cambridge and who subsequently had been admitted as advocates (similar to admittance to the bar for common lawyers) by the dean of arches, the presiding officer of the Court of Appeal under the authority of the archbishop of Canterbury.
