1840 One Penny Black Plate VIII Covers 1840 (19 Aug.) entire bearing SL, large to enormous margins and cancelled by a dark red Maltese Cross in the top left corner of entire to Beith, the reverse with a fine strike of straight-line "dalry" in red; the contents are from the Clerk´s Bridge Trust acknowledging payment "... for quarrying metal to Beith road, five pounds sterling" and is dated "19th August 1840"; filing creases not detracting from the fine appearance of this attractive cover. This is the earliest recorded use of the plate VIII, the previous earliest date being 5th September Estimate £ 500-1,000
