Pre-Stamp Essays 1839 Treasury Competition Essays R. Prosser: "receipt stamp/two ounce/2 pence" in red-brown on paper, the reverse with printed instruction for use. "This stamp, if firmly attached to a letter not exceeding two ounce weight, with the Post Town and the date and address of such letter legibly copied on the back of this Stamp, will be signed by the Post Office and returned to the bearer as a receipt for the delivery of such a letter into the Post"; very faint manuscript on face, "September 19, 1839 Birmingham, to the Lords Commissioners of ...".
