Exchequer Bill, 1709, £100, with interest at 2d per day, raised for increasing the capital stock of the Bank of England, scrollwork at left and right, black printing on thick paper, signed ´Halifax,´ embossed exchequer seal at bottom right, numerous handwritten endorsements on the reverse, ink cancellation on face, slight nibble from right margin but very fine and scarce. Estimate £ 800-1,200 Charles Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax (1661 – 1715), Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1694. Implemented plans for the establishment of the Bank of England in the same year. Audior of the Exchequer from 1699.
