Carstairs joined the Southern Nigeria Regiment in 1901 from the Canadian Militia. The Southern Nigeria regiment of the WAFF was formed in 1901 from the Niger Coast Constabulary and 300 Royal Niger Company´s Constabulary. The Niger Coast Constabulary was formed in 1892 by Sir R. Moor then known as the Oil Rivers Irregulars. The name was changed in 1893.
