Lot: 549

x New South Wales used in the Moreton Bay District The Provisional Period (26.1.1860 - 31.10.1860) Warwick (81) 1860 (16 Mar.) entire letter headed "Warwick" registered to Tenterfield, prepaid with 2d. blue, carried across the border and cancelled by "260" sunburst of Maryland, showing manuscript "Registered" and "Recd 6d paid" with Maryland c.d.s. on reverse. Most unusual. Photo Estimate £ 2,000-2,500 Note: When Queensland became a separate Colony on 15 December 1859, the cross border rate rose from 2d. inland to 6d. intercolonial, and there was a certain apathy towards the increase. It was also apparent that border residents could hand letters to the mail contractor who would carry them across the border, where these letters would be cancelled at the nearest Post Office.
