Antarctica 1914-16 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition by Ernest Shackleton 1914 (5 Dec.) Falkland Islands F size 2d. blue registered envelope, uprated with 1d. vermilion, from South Georgia to William Wordie in Glasgow, neatly cancelled with double-ring d.s. and bearing registration label No. 191 with London Registered hooded d.s. (12.2) in red alongside; a few minor faults though exceptionally rare, being one of only two items of registered mail that are believed to have been sent from this expedition. Photo Estimate £ 800-1,000 Note: "Endurance" left South Georgia on 5 December. By mid-January 1919 "Endurance" was beset in the Weddell Sea. She then drifted for ten months and was finally crushed. The crew escaped by boats to Elephant Island. From there Shackleton and five others sailed in the "James Caird" back to South Georgia, taking 16 days. The 22 men on Elephant Island were finally rescued on 30 August
