George I (1714-27), Revival of the Order of the Bath, 1725, silver medal by John Croker, laureate head right, rev. Prince William standing facing dressed as a Knight of the Bath, spes altera above, in ex. ord.eqvit.baln.rest. et.avct.mdccxxv., 46mm. (MI 463/75), a few marks, nearly extremely fine Estimate £ 350-450 The Order of the Bath, which had fallen into neglect after the coronation of Charles II, was revived by George I in 1725. This involved enacting a new book of Statutes and augmenting the decorations of the Order. Prince William, later the Duke of Cumberland, the second son or ´the other hope of the country´ was aged four years in 1725 and was the first knight of the revived order. He was later to be the victor of Culloden, notorious for his repression of the Jacobite rebellion in the Highlands of Scotland and the subject of Handel´s anthem ´see the conquering hero comes.´
