R. 19225 Private Alfred Bunce, M.M. served during the Great War with the 1st Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment in the French Theatre of War, from 29.11.1915; Bunce´s battalion as part of the 91st Brigade, 7th Division, were in action on the Somme from the 1st of July to the third week of September 1916, in particular on the 1st Day of the Battle when they led the assault on Mametz; took part in the attack on High Wood, 14th July, and when they attacked Delville Wood, 31st August.
