Smith, 2nd Bn Border Regiment ´For gallant conduct in conveying messages on many occasions whilst exposed to the enemy´s fire´ 3589483 Sergeant Leonard Smith, D.C.M., served during the Great War with the 2nd Battalion Border Regiment on the Western Front, from 5.10.1914; landing as part of the 7th Division the 2/Borders were thrust straight into the action at the First Battle of Ypres, fighting throughout the battle, and suffering heavily, particularly 22nd-24th October when the battalion ´had lost four hundred and more´ (Official History of the War, Military Operations, France and Belgium 1914, refers); in the early part of 1915 Smith´s battalion were also engaged in the Battle of Neuve Chappelle.
