A Fine Collection of Middle Eastern and North African Banknotes
SPINK LONDON | Amidst Spink's smorgasbord of banknote auctions is a very special auction of A Fine Collection of Middle Eastern and North African Banknotes. The sale includes a plethora of rare trials, die proofs, specimens and essays from all sorts of countries. Spink is confident there is something in this sale for everyone. The sale will take place on the 25th April 2017 from 11am.
The enthusiasm of the owner for the subject is apparent from the breadth and depth of material present. There are superb groups of Egypt including a lovely specimen £100 of 1912, (lot 223) excellent selections of Iraq and Jordan - both very popular with collectors - and of course some very attractive Gulf material. Many of the specimens and trials are extremely rare and in some cases unique.
Lot 223, estimated: £4,000 - 5,000
The star lots though, have to be a group of Saudi Arabian essays for unknown designs, mostly hand produced and all extremely beautiful. The most stunning of which is lot 375, a Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency, printer's obverse and reverse composite essay for 100 riyals, ND (ca.1970), zero serial number, showing Al-Masjid al-Nabawi mosque at right centre and Anwar Ali and Musaíid bin Abdul Rahman signatures. It was presumably intended as part of the 1971 series, as several design elements are similar and the date fits, but it is an absolutely beautiful unknown design, stunningly executed in bright colours, with wonderful workmanship, entirely unique. Spink is confident that this item will set the room ablaze with bidding from across the world, and even in the room.
Lot 375, estimated: £10,000 - 15,000.
