An Exceptional Start to the World Stamp Exhibition
SPINK SINGAPORE | Spink, the official auctioneer and key sponsor of the World Stamp Exhibition is delighted to announce that the event has kicked off in an exceptional manner! With five auctions in three days Spink are racking up successful sales a mile a minute.
On the evening of the 15th August, Spink held an Evening of Selected Rums, Fine Wines, Whiskies and Cognacs, a sophisticated and prestigious event that was enhanced by the delightful atmosphere in the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. A wonderful success, with a cask of 2003 Demerara rum which is currently lying in Scotland, (lot 33) selling for S$29,280 (incl. premium).
This delightful event was immediately followed by the launch of Frank Goon's 2nd edition of 'Banknotes of British Malaya', a wonderful book which redefines the parameters of banknote collecting entirely. Published by Spink, we have been honoured to be involved with such an amazing volume. The launch was a huge success, and Frank himself was delighted with the large turn-out.
On the 16th August 2015, the World Stamp Exhibition saw three auctions of exceptional calibre, breaking many world records and exceeding our highest expectations. Amongst the excitement of the day, many lots stood above the others in terms of rarity, beauty and for reaching phenomenal prices. There was a great start to the Sentosa auction, which has been split into three sections to encompass the enormous sale. The India used section remained as popular as ever with many big prices being paid. Three world records were achieved in the first session alone, with lot 363, a Straits Settlements 1906-12 Watermark multiple crown CA issued $500 purple and orange achieving S$264,000 (incl. premium). Alongsidfe this amazing result was lot 264, achieving S$180,000 and lot 386 selling for S$168,000.
During the numismatic sale of Banknotes, Bonds & Shares, Coins and Medals auction lot 142, a Malayan Board of Commissioners of Currency specimen $1000 note sold for S$76,000 (incl. premium). Not to be outshone, lot 87, a Reserve Bank of India specimen 5000 rupees sold for S$72,000. However, the show-stopper was the final lot. Placed at the very end to round the sale off with a bang, was the exquisite Manchukyo Grand Order of the Order of the Orchid Blossom. An excessively rare and important collar chain with badge appendant, it appropriately fetched a price that reflected its importance, realising S$216,000.
Our final sale will take place on Tuesday 18th August, the 'Stamps and Covers of South East Asia', which contains a vast selection of philatelic items from many different countries. With something for everyone, this is a sale worthy of closing the series of Spink sales throughout the exhibition.
The sales are being held in the Heliconia Ballroom 3405-3406, Level 3, Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands, 10 Bayfront Ave, Singapore 018956. Specialists will be on hand throughout the day to discuss and advise on collecting or growing your existing collection.
