On 18^th December 2014, Spink London sold two superb gold Tudor Sovereigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII for a combined price of £732,000 (incl. premium). As a result Spink now hold the new world record for the highest price realised for a Tudor coin at auction.

Victor of the Battle of Bosworth, Henry VII, 1485-1509, issued the auction highlight (Lot 540). This type III sovereign, a masterpiece of renaissance art, is vaunted as one of the finest of the issue. It sold for £372,000 against a conservative estimate of £120,000-160,000. It is so rare that pieces of such quality and historic significance come up for sale that this lot was described as a landmark opportunity for collectors.

Equally impressive was the 'fat face' sovereign of Henry VIII's third coinage (Lot 541), again conservatively estimated at £120,000-150,000, but sold for £360,000. This piece boasts a remarkable provenance first being recorded in the 1854 Cuff sale and passing through eminent hands such as Lord Hastings, Bernard Roth, and finally the Ryan collection. Indeed it has been 64 years since the Ryan sale, the last time this piece came to auction.
