A moment of history: Spink will re-unite the first two Victoria Crosses awarded during WWI, to Lieutenant Maurice Dease and Private Sidney Godley, as part of a unique exhibition focusing upon the tumultuous first four months of the conflict. Recently the subject of a BBC programme, Our World War- the first day, the story of how the actions of Dease and Godley helped hold up the German Army is dramatically told. Both men were subsequently awarded the Victoria Cross, Britain's highest gallantry award.

Using historical items, in which Spink specialises, the exhibition as a whole narrates how the war evolved on land, at sea and in the air. The exhibition covers the beginnings of U-Boat warfare, the first bombing of civilians from the air and the sea, the role of women at the front line, the economic challenges, the use of propaganda and an unrivalled collection of gallantry
awards covering all of the initial actions.

For a different perspective of 1914 visit the exhibition at Spink, 8th - 12th September and 15th to 20th September between 10am and 5pm.
