Auction: SW1020 - Maritime Mail of Spanish Colonies in America
Lot: 267
VenezuelaOutgoing MailBritish Post Office1853, Dec. 3. Cover (one back flap missing at left) from Puerto Cabello addressed to the General Commander of the Navy in the Harbour of Havana (Cuba), apparently with no involvement of the Venezuelan mails, directly entering the British Consular P.O., displaying a bold strike of "Paid/At/Porto Cabello" crowned circle, with matching double-arc datestamp on reverse, alongside with same St. Thomas type and receiving c.d.s. of Havana. On front, handwritten "Paid 2/-" for the two shillings maritime fee paid for the portion of the journey to St. Thomas, two blue strikes of "Islas De/Barlovento" in two lines (P.E. 33) and "4" reales rate marking paid by the recipient. Typical aging of the incoming mail to Cuba. The latest usage recorded of only three items so far recorded showing this desirable crowned circle, being unique in combination with a Spanish postmark. Additionally, as a further degree of rarity, it is to be noted that this "Islas de Barlovento" marking is very rarely found in blue (unlisted in this colour by Guinovart-Tizón).
