Auction: SW1020 - Maritime Mail of Spanish Colonies in America
Lot: 238

PeruIncoming Mail1808 circa. Folded cover from Madrid to Arequipa, denoting royal mail with remarkable "Por el Rey dn. Ferndo. 7°" patriotic endorsement in ink at top, indicating the name of the King Fernando VII, paying an up to one ounce weight with "13" reales in manuscript, including 10 reales of the maritime fee, struck in transit by red "Cadiz" postmark. This cover may have been sent either in 1808, when the French invaded Spain and Napoleon later overthrew Fernando VII, or from 1814, when Fernando VII was able to return to Spain to be proclamed King again. Vertical fold not detracting. Very interesting and most rare. Ex Camino.
