Auction: SW1020 - Maritime Mail of Spanish Colonies in America
Lot: 118
CubaIncoming Mail1839, Jan 12. Ship's register envelope accompanying the "Fama" schooner in its journey from Cádiz (Spain) to Havana, bearing two clean strikes of two-line "Se Franqueó/En Cadiz." handstamp in blue. Signed notation of delivery on reverse, also indicating the time of anchorage, alongside "6ø 240 rs." (it seems that in this case it was applied the postal tariff of 27.4.1765 in error), and complete red wax seal. Usual faint ink erosions and worm holes at base, not detracting. In the period comprised between 1818 and 1849, most of the American territories became independent, with the exception of Cuba and Puerto Rico. One of just six ship's register covers carried across the Atlantic between 1818 and the date of introduction of postage stamps in Spain; all were coincidentally sent from Spain to Cuba, and most of them are offered in this sale.
