Auction: SW1020 - Maritime Mail of Spanish Colonies in America
Lot: 101

CubaOutgoing Mail1851, Feb. 17. Entire letter from Santiago to Bordeaux, beautifully struck by fancy "Franco" marking and "S.Tiago De Cuba/Isla de Cuba" dispatch c.d.s., with oval "Correo Maritimo./N°. 8" handstamp (P.E. 51) in blue, with small French entry c.d.s. and "5" (décimes) single rate due to be collected, backstamped on arrival. This letter was initially intended to be carried by British packet, nevertheless it was placed on board an "Empresa" steamer sailing to Spain, from where it was transmitted overland via Saint-Jean-de-Luz to final destination, resulting in a very scarce mail sent to France during the second period of the "Empresa".
