Auction: SW1020 - Maritime Mail of Spanish Colonies in America
Lot: 90

CubaOutgoing Mail1846, Aug. 30. Entire letter from Havana to Madrid, prepaid on departure and attractively struck in blue with oval "Franco." with frame and "Correo Maritimo/N° " handstamps. Three slits for disinfection. Extraordinarily in 1846 steamships 1 & 2 of the "Empresa de Correos Marítimos" sank; as a consequence, it was required to provisionally contract a ship to transmit the correspondence to Spain. Mail carried by this steamship was struck with a "Empresa" marking, but no number was indicated. A very rare usage of this "Empresa" handstamp with the number deleted.
