Colombian AirmailsSociedad Colombo-Alemana de Transportes Aéreos (SCADTA)Third & Fourth Issues1924, May 23. Cover from Manizales to Cali (part of addressee's name cut out), bearing 1923 10c. and 20c., upfranked for national postage with 3c. on 4c., all tied by "Servicio Postal Aéreo Scadta/Manizales" in red, with two-line "Primer Vuelo/Medellín-Manizales-Cali" cachet in blue at left. The "Liadca" company (Líneas Aéreas del Cauca) was founded in 1924, being subsidized by the Colombian Government and Scadta, and had two Fokker CII airplanes. The opening flight had been arranged for early May 1924, but after various survey flights, it did not take place until the 23 of the same month, this explaining why the datestamp in this cover is dated 30 April. Unfortunately the plane chrashed during take-off; the cover offered here had probably been prepared for the return flight to Cali, but it is not certain if it was carried, as both planes crashed within short time, thus leading to the end of the airline's service and causing that the line was never opened. Some soiling or rust of no importance for this rarity. Also including a 1923 30c. on small fragment with "Servicio de Transportes Aéreos/Cali" double circle without date with inserted "20 May 1924" date, both in blue. According to Felipe Toro Pinzón, the only cover recorded with this cachet. One of the most significant internal airmail covers of this period. Scott C39, C41, C42. Photo
