Lot: 1008

ColombiaFirst Issue1859, 5c. blue, stone B, an extraordinary vertical strip of three from the top right of the sheet, featuring tête-bêche at top, positions 11 / 22 / 33, showing the characteristic shifted alignment of transfer in upper right corner of the sheet, with complete manuscript cancel of Rionegro, which has caused few acidic ink erosions at bottom. (To be noted a colourless "hairline" flaw in position 22, joining the "D" and "G" of "Confed." & "Granadina"). Tête-bêches are one of the most fascinating and sought after varieties in classic philately; the 5c. tête-bêche of the first Colombian issue is much scarcer in used than in unused condition, with only two pairs known and this, the largest used multiple, the only recorded being larger than a pair. Accordingly, this item is of great significance and is without doubt one of the great gems of classic Colombian philately. Scott 2a. Photo
