1917-22 Italian Post OfficesPeking1917, "PECHINO" proof overprint. An extraordinary group of 18 stamps of proof status, mainly used -some on pieces- from 23 to 30 August 1917, including "Leoni" 5c. & 10c., "Floreale" 45c. and "Michetti" 25c. & 50c. and Express 30c. (only two recorded), including inverted overprints (which were applied on August 25), the two "Leoni" values with additional "Cina" overprint from the same handstamp, slight doubling of the overprint, this appearing at top instead of at base. Before issuing the first regular surcharged set, Italian stamps were overprinted locally for proof purposes; these overprints were executed by using the post office handstamp normally applied on registration labels and covers, which read "R.R. Poste Italiane/Pechino-Cina" in capital letters, with normally only the town name being showed, and the rest of the handstamp being masked. Four Bottacchi certificates are included. An exceptional assembly including examples ranging from a very rare degree of rarity to unique. Ex Marquess of Bute. Photo
