Lot: 99

1859, 240c. vermilion, diagonal half used as 120 c. value, with wonderful margins displaying the dividing lines between clichés and a remarkably fresh impression in a pastel shade, used to pay the single weight external letter rate on 25 February 1864 cover from Montevideo to Buenos Aires, tied by oval datestamp on dispatch. A fascinating postal history rarity with only another cover known, this being unique as the only example recorded of a 240c. bisect being tied to cover, by the cancel, on the side on which the stamp was diagonally severed. Its importance is even augmented by the fact of being the only denomination known, in the "thin" figures issue, with a bisect usage. Cert. Hernández Rocha and Calves, signed Bloch. Ciardi 12. Ex Hubbard.
