Staten Island Rail-Road Company. Certificate 50 Shares $50 each. 28. March 1864. #264. Original signature of William Henry Vanderbilt (1821-1885) as President. This railway was one of Cornelius Vanderbilt's early railway ventures. Construction began in 1851 for the purposes of linking Vanderbilt’s Landing in Stapleton to Clifton. The line opened in 1860. It was never very profitable and in 1861, two locomotives were seized. Cornelius Vanderbilt’s son William Henry Vanderbilt became receiver and service continued. He had the SIRR purchased the ferry service to Manhattan in 1864. The item is in clean state, cancelation lines were removed, only the upper vignette was touched slightly. VF.
