In 1851 the company was organized as Wells, Fargo & Co. and in 1855 James was co-founder of the American Express Company. In 1867 he took over the position of General Manager of the American Express Company and was at the same time President of the Merchant Despatch Transportation Company. In 1881 he became the third president of American Express after William's death in 1881. At the end of the 1880s Fargo invented the American Express Travelers Cheque. VF.
